How to Scan a QR Code on Your Phone

When it comes to scanning QR codes, a lot has changed over the years. Back in the early days, you had to download a dedicated QR code scanning app from the App Store or Google Play. Today, most modern phones — even budget ones — can instantly scan QR codes with the built-in camera or the built-in OCR (optical character recognition) in iOS and Android.

Create Short Links
1. How to Scan a QR Code With Your Camera (iPhone & Android)
On iPhone (iOS 14–iOS 18+)
• Open the Camera app.
• Point it at the QR code (you don’t need to take a photo).
• A yellow or white pop-up appears at the top of the screen.
• Tap it to open the link in Safari.
Tip: If it doesn’t scan, go to Settings → Camera → Scan QR Codes and make sure it’s turned on. Here are some additional tips from Apple Support
On Android
Most modern Android phones (Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, etc.) support QR code scanning by default.
• Open the Camera app.
• Make sure Google Lens suggestions are enabled.
• Point the camera at the QR code.
• Tap the link that appears at the bottom.
If your phone doesn’t detect it, look for a Lens icon inside your camera app and tap it. Here are some additional tips from Google Support.
2. How to Scan a QR Code Already in Your Photo Gallery
How to Scan a QR Code in Your Gallery on iPhone
Apple calls this feature Live Text (available on iPhone X and newer).
• Open the Photos app.
• Tap the image containing the QR code.
• Tap directly on the QR code or long-press it.
• A link should appear — tap it to open.
If nothing happens:
• Look for the Live Text icon (a small text box with lines) at the bottom.
• Tap it to enable recognition.
• Then tap on the QR code again.
Note: Very old iPhones (7, 8, SE) may not support Live Text. If that’s you, jump to the browser upload method below.
How to Scan a QR Code in Your Gallery on Android
Android relies heavily on Google Lens.
• Open your Photos or Gallery app.
• Open the photo with the QR code.
• Tap the Lens icon (bottom of the screen).
• Lens will detect the QR code and display the link.
On Samsung phones, you can also try:
• Long-press the image
• Select Search with Circle to Search or Search Image
3. Scan Any QR Code Online (Upload a Photo or Screenshot)
This method works on every device, including older phones that don’t support Live Text.
If the QR code is saved in your gallery, you can upload it directly to your browser and scan it instantly:

You can:
• Upload a photo
• Upload a screenshot
• Drag & drop a QR image
• Or switch to camera mode and scan normally
It works on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, and Chromebooks.
This is the best option for:
• Blurry QR photos
• Tiny QR codes
• Damaged QR codes
• Devices without built-in OCR
• QR codes received through screenshots
5. Why Some QR Codes Don’t Scan
If a QR code isn’t working, here are common issues:
• The photo is blurry
• The QR code is cropped too tightly
• It’s too dark or overexposed
• Colors are inverted
• The resolution is too low
• Your phone is too old for OCR
• The QR code is distorted or printed incorrectly
If this happens, the browser-based scanner usually solves it:
