Smart URLs: One Link, Many Destinations
February 7, 2026
Tim Leland
If you’ve ever wanted one link to go to multiple destinations—mobile vs. desktop, US vs. UK, English vs. Spanish, QR scan vs. click—you already know the pain: this kind of setup is usually complicated, brittle, or hard to manage.
Looking to Create Short URLs?
T.LY is the best link shortener service to track, brand, and share short URLs.
Create Short Links
That’s where Smart URLs come in.
Smart URLs let a single T.LY short link route visitors to different destinations based on their context. You keep one short link, and T.LY automatically sends each visitor to the most relevant destination—based on device, browser, country, language, QR scan, VPN detection, and even time ranges.
In this guide, we’ll walk through how Smart URLs work, what you can target, and how to set them up—plus real-world examples you can use immediately.
How Smart URL matching works
Rules run top to bottom (priority order)
Smart URL rules are evaluated from top to bottom. The first rule that matches wins, and evaluation stops immediately.
Because of this, rule order matters. Always place your most specific rules at the top and broader rules below them.
Conditions inside a rule are ANDed
Each Smart URL rule can include multiple conditions. All conditions must match for the rule to apply.
Example: A rule with “United States”, “Android”, and “Chrome” will only match visitors who meet all three conditions.
Fallback to the default destination
If no Smart URL rule matches, the short link routes to your default destination.
This makes Smart URLs safe to roll out gradually—your primary destination always works, even if no rules apply.
